The Avian Energetics Lab at San Francisco State University is broadly interested in understanding the physiology, energetics, and biomechanics of flight in birds, and how it is informed by their ecology and evolutionary history. In particular, we want to uncover the relationship between morphology, physiology, and the environment in determining the locomotor capabilities and energetic requirements of flight and migration. We also set out to explore how environmental variability, flight activity and seasonality, have influenced the metabolic phenotype of birds.
